If you consider that food is energy, then you can conclude you need more food at the beginning of the day as you set off to work than you do at the end of the day, when less energy is needed as you slow down toward sleep. Some Europeans, like Spaniards and Germans, have dietary habits that correspond to this theory by eating their heaviest meal at lunch, consuming a light dinner when you don’t need much energy until you go to bed. In an Op-Ed piece written by a dietician, eating more early and less at night is discussed with research that backs it up, as well as thoughts about how snacking fits into the day. You might find what Ms. Tallmadge has to say helpful to control unhealthy food urges and develop an eating plan that can help you lose excess weight. Read more here:

Would You Know What to Do If Someone Collapsed?
In honor of February being American Heart Month, Paragon Orthopedic Center would like to remind you about the changes the American Heart Association, or AHA, made to CPR. We have previously covered this information in a newsletter, but assuming most people have not been frequently using their CPR skills, a refresher seems timely. For the general public, compression-only CPR is recommended. Only healthcare professionals are to do the mouth-to-mouth breaths. According to the AHA, 90% of the people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die. You could be the person to save someone if you know the simple technique of performing chest compressions. Click here to view a short 1 minute video and learn how:

How to Be Happier
The Wall Street Journal had an article on Tuesday about a man by the name of Arthur Brooks who teaches classes about seeking more happiness in life to students at Harvard, but he is also sought out by businesses because his teachings have a broader connection. His main areas of focus: family, friends, meaningful work, and faith/life philosophy. You should examine which one you might be neglecting to find more happiness. For friends, you need to distinguish who are your real friends, giving the insight that real friends “have a beautiful quality of uselessness: ‘I don’t need you, I just love you.'” Let that sink in. A real friend isn’t there for a benefit from you. Other keys from him: don’t stress over what you cannot change, or fear failure. Limit how stressed you allow yourself to get, and count blessings instead of burdens. Some of the teachings are aimed at a business model, but there is much to be taken away for being happier in general. Here is the whole article:

What Should I Eat When I Feel Sick?
Southern Oregon is reaching what health experts believe is the peak of the Omicron variant of COVID. That means there is a high likelihood you or someone you know is feeling sick right now, and when a person is sick, food suddenly isn’t as appealing. Make every bite count by eating foods that are easy on the stomach and high in nutrition. The Cleveland Clinic has an article that breaks down suggested foods into three categories: 1-foods for when you’re dehydrated, 2-when diarrhea is a problem, and 3-when you are feeling nauseated. Suggested foods that you can keep stocked on hand and are good for when you generally just don’t feel well are: teas, Jell-O, canned soups, canned fruit packed in juice (not syrup), cheese sticks, crackers, popsicles, and canned chicken. Paragon Orthopedics would suggest these foods for after your orthopedic surgeries too, when you need a convenient food that is helpful to your body and isn’t fast food. Read more of the suggested foods to help relieve symptoms in those three categories and put your body in a position to heal as quickly as possible:
Happy Groundhog Day!
Paragon Orthopedic Center is veering from the serious stuff today and reporting that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning. Therefore, we will supposedly have six more weeks of winter. Last year he saw his shadow as well and do you remember the extra six weeks of winter? Our average high temperature for the month of February in 2021 was 50.7 F and we got 0.44 inches of precipitation. You be the judge as to whether that sounds like more wintery weather. It’s all in good humor, as is the 1993 movie Groundhog Day. Did you know that Tom Hanks was the film’s initial choice for Phil in that movie, or that the Mayor of Punxsutawney is Bill Murray’s real brother? One more shocker: the movie was not filmed in Pennsylvania at all. You can find many more fun facts about the movie Groundhog Day here:
